Great Dane – Mantle General Care:
80% of dogs develop some sort of oral disease by just age three. This is why it is vital to keep up with the oral care of your pup. Regular brushing will prevent bacteria from building up and potentially spreading from your dogs mouth, to the rest of their body.
Clipping your pups nails every two weeks or so will prevent overgrown nails from causing serve damage to ligaments. Overgrown nails, over time, will start to push the nails back into your pups paws and can cause long term pain for your pup.
Most Danes have healthy ears, but you should still check them for signs of redness, itching or debris weekly. Any time they get goopy, clean with an ear-cleanser. Great Dane – Mantle Coat Care:
Great Danes have a very simple coat to care for. Bathing your Great Dane about once a month should be enough to keep them clean and smelling good. Great Dane – Mantle Health Concerns:
The Great Dane’s great size brings some special concerns, including joint problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Feeding a diet formulated for large breed puppies during the first year of life will help decrease the possibility of hip dysplasia, and probably elbow dysplasia. These diets allow the puppy to grow more slowly, while still achieving the same adult size–just a little later. Joint supplements, such as glucosamine chondroitin supplements, are also vital for protecting joint health throughout life. Great Dane – Mantle Heritage:
The Dane is German in origin, not Danish. The breed is thought to be over 400 years old, being descendants of Mastiff-like dogs. Known as the mighty “Apollo of Dogs,” Great Danes stand tall and strong. Danes tower over most other dogs, and when standing on their hind legs, are taller then most humans.
Danes are divided into three color families (fawn/brindle, harlequin/mantle, and blue/black) for breeding purposes in order to avoid producing colors not sanctioned by the AKC standard. Some people contend the three color families have slightly different temperaments.
